CT scans could predict dangerous leaks after rectal cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT07656974

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a narrowed inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) — seen on routine CT scans — is linked to a higher chance of anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer surgery. Anastomotic leakage is a serious complication where the surgical connection leaks. The study will review CT scans from 123 patients who had rectal cancer surgery to measure the IMA diameter and compare it with leak rates. If a strong link is found, doctors might use this information to decide which patients need extra protection, such as a temporary stoma.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If a link is found, surgeons could use CT scans to identify high-risk patients and take extra precautions to prevent leaks.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may find no clear connection, or the results may not apply to all patients.
