Can a tiny ultrasound probe stop bile duct stones from coming back?
NCT ID NCT06265311
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether using a special ultrasound probe (IDUS) during a procedure to remove bile duct stones can help predict if stones will come back. 248 adults at high risk for recurrence were randomly assigned to get IDUS or not. Researchers tracked stone return, need for drainage tubes, and other outcomes for 48 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
IDUS (intraductal ultrasound) examination
What this could lead to
If IDUS proves useful, it could help doctors decide who needs extra monitoring or procedures to prevent stone recurrence.
What could go wrong
This is a completed observational study, not a treatment trial. The results may not change practice if the test doesn't clearly reduce recurrence rates.
