New test could stop ventilators from harming ICU patients

NCT ID NCT06921655

Summary

This study is testing a new measurement, called the Pressure-Muscle Index (PMI), to help doctors set ventilator machines more safely for ICU patients with severe breathing failure. The goal is to find the 'sweet spot' of support—enough to help the patient breathe, but not so much that it weakens their breathing muscles or injures their lungs. Researchers will test different support levels on 36 patients to see if using the PMI measurement leads to better, more personalized care.
