Promising GVHD prevention trial halted early – too few patients to draw conclusions

NCT ID NCT06271616

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase II trial tested whether the drug ibrutinib could prevent chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in adults who had received a donor stem cell transplant. Only 2 people enrolled before the study was terminated early. Because of the very small number of participants, no reliable conclusions can be drawn about whether ibrutinib helps prevent GVHD.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ibrutinib

What this could lead to

If this approach had worked, it could have pointed toward a way to prevent chronic GVHD after stem cell transplants.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early with only 2 participants, so we have very little data. It is unclear if ibrutinib is effective or safe for this use.
