New drug shows promise for bulging eyes in thyroid disease

NCT ID NCT06126783

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a drug called IBI311 in 91 adults with thyroid eye disease, a condition that can cause bulging eyes and discomfort. Participants received an initial high dose followed by several maintenance doses every three weeks. The main goal was to see if the drug could reduce eye bulging by at least 2 mm without worsening the other eye. The study also looked at overall response, including reduced inflammation. Because this was an open-label extension, everyone knew they were getting the drug, which can affect results.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

IBI311 (a drug given as an infusion, first dose 10 mg/kg then 20 mg/kg every 3 weeks)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a treatment option to reduce eye bulging and inflammation in people with thyroid eye disease.

What could go wrong

This is an extension study, so it builds on earlier results. It is still relatively small (91 people) and open-label, meaning no placebo group, so results may be less reliable. Possible side effects from the drug are not detailed here.
