Could a simple surgery replace chemo for this rare Pregnancy-Related cancer?
NCT ID NCT03703271
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This study compares a repeat curettage (a scraping procedure inside the uterus) against standard chemotherapy with methotrexate as the first treatment for women with low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, a rare cancer that can develop after a molar pregnancy. The goal is to see if the surgery alone can achieve the same cure rates as chemotherapy, potentially avoiding the side effects of chemo. The trial enrolls women with a low WHO risk score who have not yet received any treatment for this condition.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Methotrexate
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a surgery-first option that spares many women from chemotherapy and its side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. The curettage may not work for everyone, and some women may still need chemotherapy. Surgical risks include infection or uterine perforation.
