New MRI dye could spot aggressive brain tumors without surgery

NCT ID NCT06014905

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early study tests a special MRI technique that uses a substance called hyperpolarized pyruvate to see how active a meningioma brain tumor is. About 50 adults with known or suspected meningioma will get an IV of this substance before an MRI scan. The goal is to see if this method can safely and reliably tell aggressive tumors from slow-growing ones, which could help avoid unnecessary biopsies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hyperpolarized carbon C 13 pyruvate

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging method could help doctors identify aggressive meningiomas without needing a biopsy, guiding treatment decisions more quickly.

What could go wrong

This is a very early pilot study with only 50 participants, so it may not work for everyone. The technique is still experimental and not yet proven to be better than standard scans.
