Oxygen therapy may help colitis patients avoid surgery

NCT ID NCT05987852

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tests if breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) can help people hospitalized with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis feel better faster. About 126 adults will receive either real or fake (sham) treatment to see if it reduces bleeding and improves bowel symptoms, potentially avoiding the need for stronger drugs or surgery. The goal is to confirm earlier small studies that showed promising results.
