Can extra cleaning with hydrogen peroxide or UV light slash ICU infections?

NCT ID NCT07233837

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding hydrogen peroxide fogging or ultraviolet light to regular cleaning can reduce infections in intensive care units. Over 5,000 adult patients in 12 Brazilian ICUs will take part. Each ICU will try all three methods (standard cleaning, cleaning plus hydrogen peroxide, and cleaning plus UV light) in random order to see which works best.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hydrogen peroxide aerosol and ultraviolet-C light

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a simple, effective way to lower infection rates in intensive care units, reducing antibiotic use and improving patient safety.

What could go wrong

This is a pragmatic trial, but previous studies have shown mixed results. The benefit may be small or limited to specific settings, and the extra cleaning steps add time and cost.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

Catheter-Related Infections nosocomial infection Pneumonia, Ventilator-Associated urinary tract infection
