Can exercising at home before lung surgery be as good as going to a clinic?

NCT ID NCT06866717

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a prehabilitation program that combines home and center-based exercise works as well as a center-only program for people about to have lung cancer surgery. 38 adults with non-small cell lung cancer will be randomly assigned to either 15 sessions at the center or 3 center sessions plus 12 home sessions using a stationary bike and app. The main goal is to see if both groups improve their aerobic fitness equally before surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
prehabilitation program (exercise training with cycle ergometer, pulse oximeter, activity tracker, and tablet app)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more flexible, accessible way for lung cancer patients to improve their fitness before surgery, potentially leading to better recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 38 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Exercise carries risks like muscle soreness or injury, and the home-based approach may not match the center-based program's effectiveness.
