Could a gel replace bone grafts for tooth socket healing?
NCT ID NCT07496437
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares a gel made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid (a natural substance) to standard bone grafting for preserving the jawbone after a tooth is pulled. Forty-eight adults needing a tooth extraction and later a dental implant will be randomly assigned to receive either the gel or a bone graft. The main goal is to see if the gel works as well as the bone graft at preventing bone loss over 4 months, with fewer downsides like long healing times.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- cross-linked hyaluronic acid
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simpler, faster-healing alternative to bone grafts for preserving jawbone after tooth extraction, potentially reducing the need for additional grafting before dental implants.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 48 participants, and it tests non-inferiority—meaning it aims to show the new method is not worse than the standard, not necessarily better. The results may not apply to all teeth or patients.
