New shot aims to tame genital herpes outbreaks
NCT ID NCT05298254
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested an experimental immunotherapy for herpes simplex virus (HSV) in 505 people. In the first part, healthy adults aged 18-40 received different vaccine-like formulations to check safety. In the second part, adults aged 18-60 with recurrent genital herpes got the treatment to see if it reduces outbreaks. The goal is to find a safe and effective way to control the virus.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- HSV-targeted immunotherapy (vaccine-like shots)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a treatment that reduces or prevents genital herpes outbreaks, helping people manage the condition better.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase trial (phase 1/2), so it is primarily testing safety and immune response. The treatment may not reduce outbreaks, and side effects like pain, redness, or fever are possible.
