ERs could be key to boosting HPV shots in High-Risk adults

NCT ID NCT06229353

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explored whether giving the HPV vaccine in the emergency department (ER) could help protect adults aged 18-45 who haven't been fully vaccinated. Researchers enrolled 34 participants and offered the vaccine during their ER visit, with follow-up doses at 2 and 6 months. The goal was to see if the ER is a practical place to reach high-risk, under-immunized adults and improve vaccination rates against HPV, which can cause certain cancers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could make it easier for high-risk adults to get the HPV vaccine during an ER visit, potentially preventing HPV-related cancers.

What could go wrong

The study was terminated early with only 34 participants, so results are limited. It may not show a clear benefit or be practical in other ER settings.
