Period blood may offer a needle-free HPV test — a trial puts it to the test
NCT ID NCT07733557
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether human papillomavirus (HPV) can be accurately detected from menstrual blood collected at home. Participants who had a routine HPV test within the past 90 days will use a special kit to collect a menstrual blood sample. The results will be compared with their earlier clinical test to see if the two methods agree. If successful, menstrual blood sampling could become a noninvasive, convenient option for HPV screening.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Endometrics Menstrual Blood Collection Kit (a self-collection device for menstrual blood sampling)
- What this could lead to
- If menstrual blood testing proves accurate, it could offer a simpler, less invasive way to screen for HPV without a clinic visit.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 participants. The menstrual blood test may not match the accuracy of standard cervical HPV testing.
