Home workouts may boost muscle power in kidney patients

NCT ID NCT02923063

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a personalized, home-based exercise program done via video calls could improve muscle function in people with moderate-to-severe chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are not on dialysis. Thirty-two sedentary adults aged 30-75 with CKD took part. They did combined aerobic and resistance exercises three times a week for 12 weeks. The goal was to see if exercise could boost muscle mitochondria and physical performance, potentially revealing new ways to treat muscle wasting in CKD.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Combined aerobic and resistance exercise via videoconferencing

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward exercise programs that improve muscle function and quality of life in people with chronic kidney disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 32 participants. Results may not apply to all kidney disease patients, and the exercise program may not be effective for everyone.
