Teens with HIV: does inflammation harm thinking skills?
NCT ID NCT07165639
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether inflammation from HIV affects thinking skills in teens aged 13-19 in Eswatini. Researchers will compare 50 HIV-positive teens on antiretroviral therapy with 30 HIV-negative teens. They will test memory, attention, and processing speed, and measure inflammation markers in blood. The goal is to understand the link between HIV, inflammation, and brain health in adolescents.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could reveal how inflammation from HIV affects brain function in teens, pointing toward ways to protect their thinking skills.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to all teens with HIV. It looks at links, not causes, and may not lead to treatments.
