Heated chemotherapy after stomach cancer surgery: a new hope?
NCT ID NCT05871099
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether adding heated chemotherapy (HIPEC) directly into the abdomen after stomach cancer surgery can help patients live longer and prevent cancer from coming back in the belly. About 616 adults with advanced stomach cancer will be split into two groups: one gets standard surgery plus chemotherapy, and the other gets the same plus two rounds of HIPEC. The study aims to see if HIPEC improves 5-year survival and lowers the rate of cancer spread in the abdomen.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new standard treatment to help people with advanced stomach cancer live longer and reduce the chance of cancer spreading in the abdomen.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large phase 3 trial, but the added benefit of HIPEC over standard treatment is not yet proven. The procedure itself carries risks like infection or organ damage, and it may not improve survival for everyone.
