New exercise program aims to boost recovery after second hip replacement

NCT ID NCT05657054

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 16-week hip strengthening exercise program, done mostly at home with some physiotherapist guidance, can improve physical function and reduce pain in people undergoing a second hip replacement. About 84 participants will be randomly assigned to either the exercise program or standard community rehabilitation. The main goal is to see if the exercise group performs better on a sit-to-stand test after 16 weeks.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

exercise intervention targeting hip strengthening

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better rehabilitation program for people undergoing revision hip replacement, improving their physical function and reducing pain.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 84 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercise program may be no better than standard rehab, and some patients may find it difficult to complete.
