Vitamin e in hip implants: a Longer-Lasting fix?
NCT ID NCT01713062
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compares two types of hip implant liners—one with vitamin E and one without—to see which lasts longer and causes fewer problems like wear or bone damage. Researchers are following 400 adults aged 18 to 75 who need a hip replacement due to arthritis. The goal is to find out if the vitamin E liner reduces implant failure over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hip implant liner (highly cross-linked polyethylene with or without vitamin E)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding vitamin E to hip implant liners reduces wear and extends implant life, improving outcomes for hip replacement patients.
What could go wrong
This is a long-term study still in progress, so results are not yet final. The benefit of vitamin E may be small or not apply to all patients, and implant failure or complications remain possible.
