New flap technique aims to seal tricky Mouth-Sinus holes
NCT ID NCT06066086
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a hinge flap—a piece of tissue from the mouth side of a chronic hole between the mouth and sinus—to reinforce a standard cheek flap for closing the hole. Forty adults with such holes in the back of the upper jaw will be randomly assigned to get either the hinge flap plus cheek flap or a palatal flap. The goal is to see if the hinge flap reduces the chance of the hole coming back and makes surgery easier.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hinge flap procedure
What this could lead to
If successful, this technique could offer a simpler, more reliable way to close difficult oroantral fistulas without needing a palatal flap.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The hinge flap may still fail or cause complications like infection or recurrence.
