Can exercise boost brain health in seniors? new study tests HIIT vs. moderate workouts
NCT ID NCT07248709
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) can improve thinking skills and physical fitness in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Sixty-eight participants exercised three times a week for eight weeks. Researchers measured memory, attention, and fitness before, during, and after the program. The goal is to find which type of exercise best supports brain health in aging.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

exercise training (high-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that specific exercise programs help improve thinking and physical fitness in older adults with mild memory problems.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 68 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Exercise benefits can vary, and the study does not test a drug or cure.
