New scanner could spare thousands from second breast cancer surgeries

NCT ID NCT04999917

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tested whether a high-resolution PET-CT scan of the removed breast tumor during surgery can help surgeons see if any cancer cells are left behind. About 206 women with early-stage breast cancer received a low-dose radioactive tracer before surgery, and the removed tissue was scanned right in the operating room. If the scan showed suspicious margins, the surgeon removed extra tissue immediately, aiming to reduce the 20-30% rate of repeat surgeries.
