First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study aims to improve treatment for severe high altitude pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and cerebral edema (brain swelling). Researchers will test breathing support devices and inhaled nitric oxide gas in over 3,000 patients in Tibet. The goal is to speed up recovery, reduce hospital stays, and prevent deaths.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

inhaled nitric oxide

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish standard treatments for severe high altitude sickness, reducing deaths and improving recovery in mountainous regions.

What could go wrong

This trial is not yet recruiting and is early-stage. The treatments may not prove effective for all patients, and side effects from nitric oxide or breathing devices are possible.
