First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 11, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study investigated whether a high dose of the common antiviral drug valacyclovir (Valtrex), used to treat herpes, could slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. It involved 120 people with mild Alzheimer's who also tested positive for herpes simplex virus. Participants took either the drug or a placebo for 18 months to see if it helped preserve memory and thinking skills and reduced brain changes linked to Alzheimer's.
