Common cold sore drug tested as potential Alzheimer's slowing treatment

NCT ID NCT03282916

Summary

This study tested whether a high dose of the common antiviral drug Valtrex (valacyclovir), used to treat herpes, could slow the progression of mild Alzheimer's disease. It involved 130 patients who had both Alzheimer's and evidence of a herpes simplex virus infection. Over 18 months, researchers compared the drug to a placebo to see if it helped preserve memory and thinking skills and reduced brain changes linked to Alzheimer's.
