New hope for hepatitis c: triple therapy shows promise in untreated patients

NCT ID NCT00780416

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new drug called MP-424 (Telaprevir) added to the standard two-drug therapy for hepatitis C. It involved 189 adults with genotype 1 hepatitis C who had never been treated before. The goal was to see if the triple combination could clear the virus from the blood for at least 24 weeks after treatment ended.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Telaprevir (MP-424) combined with peginterferon alfa-2b and ribavirin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a more effective treatment for hepatitis C, helping more patients clear the virus.

What could go wrong

This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all patients, and side effects from the drug combination can be significant.
