Blood thinner may keep wrist arteries open after heart procedure
NCT ID NCT04374799
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving heparin (a blood thinner) during heart catheterization through the wrist can prevent the radial artery from becoming blocked afterward. About 1,600 patients will be randomly assigned to receive no anticoagulant, a low dose, or a high dose of heparin. The main goal is to see if heparin reduces artery blockage, while also checking for bleeding and other complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Heparin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple blood thinner prevents artery blockages after a common heart procedure.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but heparin is already widely used; the benefit over placebo may be small. Bleeding risks are a concern.
