New blood test could replace painful heart biopsies for transplant patients

NCT ID NCT03575910

First seen May 07, 2026 ยท Last updated May 07, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new blood test called HEARTBiT that uses 9 RNA markers to detect acute rejection in heart transplant patients. Researchers measured these markers in blood samples from 196 patients across North America. The goal is to replace the current standard of 12-15 invasive heart biopsies in the first year after transplant with a simple, fast, and accurate blood test. If successful, this could reduce patient discomfort, lower healthcare costs, and allow for easier long-term monitoring.
