Heart-Lung check before surgery could flag risks

NCT ID NCT07016022

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a quick, non-invasive test that measures heart rate and breathing patterns before thoracic surgery can help predict which patients are more likely to have complications after the operation. Researchers will enroll 130 adults undergoing major chest surgery for cancer. The goal is to see if this test is feasible and if it can improve upon current risk assessment methods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CardioPulmonary Variability Assessment (a non-invasive test measuring heart rate and breathing patterns)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple test that helps doctors identify patients at higher risk of complications after thoracic surgery, allowing for personalized care to prevent problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study (130 participants) that only looks for associations, not proven benefits. The test may not reliably predict complications, and results may not apply to all surgery patients.
