Can a tiny heart implant keep shock survivors out of the hospital?
NCT ID NCT04419480
First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 17 times
Summary
This study tests whether a small implanted device called CardioMEMS can help prevent serious complications in people who have survived cardiogenic shock, a life-threatening condition where the heart suddenly can't pump enough blood. The device measures pressure inside the pulmonary artery, and doctors use that data to adjust medications. The trial will follow 40 patients for 6 months to see if it reduces deaths, hospital stays, and improves quality of life.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CardioMEMS device (implanted heart pressure monitor)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that regular pressure monitoring helps prevent hospital readmissions and improves quality of life after cardiogenic shock.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 40 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The device requires implantation, which carries surgical risks.
