Your own blood may boost gum healing after surgery

NCT ID NCT07207668

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a gel made from patients' own blood (injectable platelet-rich fibrin, or i-PRF) could improve healing after standard gum surgery for periodontitis. 42 adults with deep gum pockets received surgery alone or surgery plus i-PRF and a root-cleaning gel. Researchers measured changes in pocket depth and gum attachment over 6 months. The goal was to see if this simple addition could lead to better outcomes.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) made from your own blood

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, natural way to improve gum healing after standard surgery for periodontitis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 42 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is an add-on to surgery, not a standalone cure.
