Mind over matter: guided imagery may ease pain and anxiety after joint surgery
NCT ID NCT07194252
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a guided imagery technique—where patients listen to calming scenarios before and after surgery—can lower anxiety, reduce pain, and cut down on painkiller use in 128 people undergoing hip or knee replacement. The intervention is given four times around surgery. Researchers will measure anxiety with a questionnaire and pain with a 0-10 scale. If effective, it could offer a simple, non-drug way to improve recovery.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to help patients feel less anxious and use fewer painkillers after joint replacement surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with no blinding, so results may be influenced by patient expectations. The effect may be modest or not better than standard care.
