Growth hormone trial aims to boost recovery in elderly brain injury patients

NCT ID NCT07481656

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving growth hormone to elderly patients (60+) with moderate to severe brain injury and low blood protein can improve their nutritional status. Half of the 160 participants will get daily growth hormone shots plus standard care, while the other half gets standard care alone. The main goal is to see if albumin levels rise after two weeks, with secondary checks on infection rates, hospital stay length, and safety.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) injection
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to help elderly brain injury patients recover faster by improving nutrition and reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (160 people) testing a short-term effect on blood protein levels, not long-term recovery. The hormone may cause side effects like high blood sugar.
