One shot to stop pneumonia? new trial for brain injury patients
NCT ID NCT07450404
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a single dose of the antibiotic ceftriaxone can prevent early pneumonia in 60 brain-injured patients who need a breathing tube. Researchers will measure drug levels in the blood to see if enough reaches the infection site, especially in patients with faster kidney function. The goal is to improve prevention strategies for this high-risk group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ceftriaxone (an antibiotic)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help prevent early pneumonia in brain-injured patients on ventilators, reducing infections and improving recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (60 participants) that only measures drug levels, not actual prevention. Results may not apply to all patients, and antibiotic resistance is a risk.
