Grandma's secret weapon against colds? mentoring kids may strengthen immunity

NCT ID NCT05534425

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a community mentoring program called Generation Xchange (GenX) can help older African-American adults fight off respiratory viruses. 160 participants over age 50 will be randomly assigned to the program or a control group. Researchers will measure immune activity and antibody levels to see if social engagement can enhance antiviral resistance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

GenX intergenerational mentoring program

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-drug way to strengthen the immune system against respiratory viruses like colds, flu, and COVID-19.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 160 participants, looking at immune markers rather than actual infection rates. The effect may be small or not translate to real-world protection.
