Can genes predict liver damage from childhood cancer drugs?

NCT ID NCT04168788

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study investigates whether certain genetic differences make children with nephroblastoma (kidney cancer) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (blood cancer) more likely to develop a serious liver condition called hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) during chemotherapy. Researchers will analyze blood samples from 85 children treated in France between 2000 and 2018 to look for genetic markers linked to this toxicity. The goal is to better understand why some children experience this severe side effect, which can interrupt treatment and be life-threatening.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If genetic markers are found, doctors could identify children at higher risk for liver damage and adjust their cancer treatment to avoid it.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study that looks back at past cases, so it cannot prove cause and effect. The results may not apply to all children or treatments.
