First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated Jun 16, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study looked for genetic differences that might make some children and teens more prone to severe cavities. Researchers compared 390 participants—young patients with at least three active cavities and cavity-free young adults—to find mutations in genes linked to enamel structure. The goal was to understand why some people get severe tooth decay despite good oral care.
