Scientists reprogram Patient's own cells to hunt cancer

NCT ID NCT00923806

Summary

This was an early-stage study testing a new gene therapy for advanced cancer that had spread. Doctors took a patient's own white blood cells, genetically modified them in a lab to recognize a specific protein found on cancer cells, and then infused them back into the patient. The goal was to see if these 're-trained' immune cells could safely shrink tumors in patients who had run out of standard treatment options.
