Pig liver keeps patient alive while waiting for human transplant

NCT ID NCT07519005

First seen Apr 25, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This early-stage trial tests whether a gene-edited pig liver, used outside the body like a dialysis machine, can temporarily support liver function in one person with severe liver failure. The goal is to keep the patient stable until a human liver becomes available for transplant. Participants receive strong anti-rejection drugs during and after the procedure, so this is not a cure but a bridge to transplant.
