Can a belly ultrasound prevent a rare but deadly surgery complication?
NCT ID NCT06666049
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a bedside stomach ultrasound can help doctors assess the risk of food or liquid entering the lungs during surgery in patients taking GLP-1 drugs (like Ozempic). These drugs slow stomach emptying, which may increase risk even after standard fasting. Researchers will measure stomach volume in 39 adults before scheduled surgery to see if the ultrasound helps guide safer airway management.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Gastric ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple, non-invasive way to identify patients at higher risk of aspiration during surgery, helping doctors make safer airway decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 39 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The technique also depends on operator skill and may not always be accurate.
