Knife or no knife? new trial tests surgery for wrist lumps
NCT ID NCT07162415
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ways to treat painful wrist ganglions (fluid-filled lumps). Half of the 220 adult participants will have surgery to remove the ganglion, while the other half will do exercises and use their hand normally. Researchers will measure pain, function, and satisfaction over 6 to 12 months to see which approach works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgery (open or arthroscopic resection)
What this could lead to
If surgery proves better than exercises, it could become the preferred treatment for painful wrist ganglions.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (220 people) and results may not apply to everyone. Surgery also carries risks like infection or nerve damage.
