Protein shake vs. gut trouble: can whey help athletes digest fructose after heat stress?
NCT ID NCT06648967
First seen Jul 24, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a multi-ingredient whey supplement can reduce fructose malabsorption in healthy adults after hiking under heat stress. Eight participants will consume fructose and have their breath hydrogen measured as a marker of malabsorption, both before and after 3 to 5 weeks of daily protein supplementation. The goal is to better understand exercise-related gut distress, which affects up to 90% of athletes.
