New study aims to replace painful liver biopsies with simple tests

NCT ID NCT03695796

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study gathered information from over 1,000 people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to improve non-invasive tests for liver scarring. Currently, doctors often need to take a small sample of liver tissue (biopsy) to check for damage, which is uncomfortable and risky. The goal was to validate blood tests and ultrasound-based tools that can accurately detect advanced liver fibrosis without a needle, helping future patients get diagnosed more safely and easily.
