Diverticulitis dilemma: landmark study to settle surgery debate

NCT ID NCT03994978

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is comparing two approaches for people with recurrent, uncomplicated diverticulitis: elective surgery to remove part of the colon versus conservative (non-surgical) management. The goal is to see which approach leads to better bowel function and quality of life. Researchers will follow 252 participants over time, measuring things like fecal incontinence, constipation, and overall gastrointestinal well-being.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

elective sigmoidectomy (surgical removal of part of the colon)

What this could lead to

If successful, this trial could provide clear evidence on whether surgery or conservative management is better for bowel function and quality of life in people with recurrent diverticulitis.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient choice. It is also relatively small (252 participants) and focuses on a specific condition, so findings may not apply broadly.
