Could your diet affect transplant complications? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT04660487

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is looking at whether certain carbohydrates in food, called FODMAPs, are related to graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in people who have had a bone marrow transplant. GVHD is a common complication where donor cells attack the patient's body. Researchers will track 100 transplant patients to see how their gut bacteria break down FODMAPs and if that affects GVHD timing or severity. This is an observational study, meaning it does not test a new treatment but aims to gather information for future research.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this study finds a link, it could point toward dietary changes that might help manage or reduce GVHD risk after transplant.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. It only looks for a relationship, so it may not lead to any direct benefit or change in care.
