Poop pills vs antibiotics: new hope for stubborn gut infections?

NCT ID NCT05266807

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 10, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) capsules, made from healthy donor stool, can prevent C. diff infection from coming back better than standard antibiotics. About 100 adults with a first or first-recurrent C. diff infection will get either antibiotics alone or antibiotics followed by FMT capsules. The main goal is to see who stays infection-free for 8 weeks after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) capsules from healthy donors
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a safer, more effective way to prevent C. diff from coming back, reducing the need for repeated antibiotics.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small Phase 3 trial (100 people), and FMT is still experimental. It may not work better than antibiotics, and there are unknown risks from donor stool.
