Glow-in-the-Dark dye could help surgeons spot hidden cancer cells
NCT ID NCT06873815
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving a fluorescent dye called fluorescein sodium before vulvectomy helps surgeons see and remove all extramammary Paget's disease cells. About 27 adults with noninvasive or microinvasive disease will receive the dye intravenously in the operating room. The main goal is to see if this reduces the chance of leaving cancer cells behind, which could lower the need for repeat surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fluorescein sodium (a dye given by IV before surgery)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help surgeons remove all disease cells during vulvectomy, reducing the chance that cancer is left behind.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 27 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The dye could cause allergic reactions or other complications.
