New device may speed up eye exams by skipping dilation drops

NCT ID NCT02466607

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a device called RETeval that measures the retina's electrical activity in response to light flashes. Researchers wanted to see if changing the flash color or skipping pupil dilation still gives useful results. 18 healthy adults participated. The goal is to make eye exams quicker and more comfortable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make eye exams faster and easier by allowing ERG tests without pupil dilation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It only measures basic eye responses, not disease outcomes, so practical benefits are uncertain.
