NCT ID NCT00798226
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving pregnant women fish oil supplements can prevent asthma, eczema, and allergies in their children. 800 mothers took fish oil or a placebo from week 24 of pregnancy until one week after birth. The children are then followed for several years to see if they develop these conditions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fish oil (n-3 fatty acids)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement during pregnancy to lower the child's risk of asthma and allergies.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial, so results are not yet proven. The supplement may not prevent these conditions, and individual results may vary.
