Heart stent showdown: FFR vs. angiography for major artery blockage
NCT ID NCT05829889
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two methods of guiding stent placement in the left main coronary artery: standard angiography versus fractional flow reserve (FFR), which measures blood pressure across the blockage. About 960 adults with significant left main artery disease will be randomly assigned to one method. The goal is to see which approach leads to fewer major heart problems—like heart attack, repeat procedures, or death—over two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) guided by either fractional flow reserve (FFR) or angiography
- What this could lead to
- If FFR-guided PCI proves better, it could become the standard approach for treating left main coronary artery disease, potentially reducing heart attacks and repeat procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large but still early-stage comparison; results may show no significant difference between the two methods, and individual patient outcomes can vary. Risks of PCI include bleeding, infection, or vessel damage.
