Custom diet may help oversized babies learn to eat faster
NCT ID NCT04599010
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a special diet based on a baby's lean body mass can help large newborns (born with excess body fat) who struggle with oral feeding. Researchers will compare this tailored feeding approach to standard care in 40 infants. The goal is to see if the diet helps babies reach full oral feeding sooner and reduces the need for feeding tubes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
energy-restricted diet based on fat-free mass
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary adjustment to help large newborns with feeding problems eat on their own sooner.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 40 infants, so results may not be conclusive or apply to all babies. The diet is short-term and may not work for everyone.
